Lugger Updates

In the last couple of weeks, the decks got a couple more coats of paint, a layer of non-skid and a final coat of paint.

The boat was then flipped by six guys. Some sanding and fairing was done. Two coats or Mar-X-ite were applied. We are currently going over the hull attempting to get it nice an smooth. Some gaps along the strakes were also filled with epoxy.

Bill enlarged the the slot for the bottom rudder fitting and got that installed.

Outside is running a good article by Tim Zimmermann on single hander, Ronnie Simpson. Ronnie has been through a lot of stuff since he joined the Marine Corps. Very little seems to slow him down

Tough Ocean Boat

We saw an interesting boat at the 2011 Big Seattle Boat Show. It is an ocean rowboat that is manned by four people. The boat has been rowed around the Pacific Northwest and across the Atlantic. The next big race is South Africa to South America.

The boat itself has most of the common safety items you would expect on a small deep water craft. This include water tight compartments, a large number of self bailing scuppers, and jack lines. The boat relies on solar energy for lighting and water making. Cooking is done on propane camp stoves.

The average weight loss for a crew member on a 72 day Atlantic crossing was 17 pounds. Two crew row while the other two rest. This continues 24 hours a day.

Another New Project

I recently joined a new effort while it is too wet to work on the San Juan 24 outdoors. The project is a Drascombe Lugger that is probably about 20 years in the making.

The boat is owned by a local fisherman who is too busy to work on it. I am joining a new friend, Bill Swain, in trying to finish her up for a spring launch. Bill has been working on the boat for a while. I am joining at a time when the decks are being painted. Once the decks are finished we will flip her and paint the topsides and bottom. The deck paint is Z Spar, Grand Banks Beige.

Some custom bronze hawse holes recently arrived from the Port Townsend Foundry. They will be inserted into the topsides.

Good News from Nereida

Jeanne has reported that she is motoring under her own power and will round the Horn and make for port in the Beagle Channel where the damage can be seen to. The full story is on her blog.

Nereida Rolled off of Cape Horn

Jean Socrates who is attempting a singlehanded circumnavigation has rolled off of Cape Horn.

to make contact direct on radio.

I have traffic from RCC Chile and USCG for her. will need assistance at
net time 0300UTC though we had fair copy last night and this afternoon.
