Swordfish Trouble

This is the amazing swordfish plank boat Pilikia, tied up in Santa Barbara. Pilikia means trouble in Hawaiian. The boat is owned by the Fish Market Seafood Restaurants and Farallon Fisheries. The boat is a cross between a mega yacht and a working fishing boat. Everything on board is immaculate.

She still fishes the old fashioned way by harpooning off of a plank that must extend 50 feet or so off her bow. When in port, the plank is raised as you can see in the background of the photo.

Apparently, swordfish that is killed outright with the harpoon is far superior in flavor to that which dies in a struggle on a pole or in a net. A fight releases hormones that can taint the meat.

There is more background information here.
