Good Stuff Around Santa Cruz Harbor

The Seabright Brewery patio is a nice place for a casual dinner. It has nice heaters and allows dogs. Try the Salmon Fish and Chips or the Gorgonzola Burger.

The Kind Grind is a great place for coffee and muffins. It is right on the beach.

The Santa Cruz Yacht Club is one of the prettiest clubs we have seen. The deck is up in the trees and overlooks the harbor.

Heading Out Under the Gate

This is what it looked like Tuesday 9/23/2008. Flat....

A little Californian surfing......

Our so called "shake -down cruise" has taken us under the Golden Gate on Tuesday Sept 23 at 11.40 am. The swells were not too bad (max 5-6 feet) but neither any significant wind that first day out. Very relaxing and peaceful first ocean sail for me. We decided to head for Half Moon Bay for a little rest after all the work in Berkeley and took off again on Thursday for our next stop at Santa Cruz to check out a few things before we cross a larger piece of the Pacific. It was absolutely fabulous surfing downwind with only the full main and stay sail up and Maitreya got us even to 9.9 knots (GPS)! No seasickness at all, although we were rocking and rolling pretty good with the waves at times 2 or 3 sec in between (that's actually the perfect timing for some small forward bends going with the flow on the boat for some of you yoga-lovers). We got a couple of waves coming over into the cockpit and the foredeck got a good wash but below everything stayed perfectly dry.
Right before the entrance to the Santa Cruz Harbor we spotted a whale about 75 feet of the boat; sorry we were too busy navigating in some fog to take a picture :-) And now we're here and have a very cute otter swimming around the boat. Good karma as the new signs for our dinghy "Otter" are ready to be put on.
Next update probably early next week when we take off again; enjoy the weekend everyone!

Dude, we're out of beer

Watch out where you anchor in central California. These guys like to party. This picture is from Port San Luis, where some boats have been sunk.

Why an Ingrid?

Ingrid's are based on Norwegian lifeboats as designed by Colin Archer for use in the North Sea and the Arctic. They have full draft keels with a protected propeller and bone-simple steering gear. They can carry a lot of sail for their length as either a ketch or a cutter. They have wide uncluttered decks. We fell in love with Ingrid's when we saw Jaga at the Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend, Washington. After that, the hunt was on for an Ingrid.

From the Galley

And yes Virgina, I did find 36 never-refrigerated farm fresh eggs at the San Francisco Farmers Market (Marin Sun Farms in Petaluma), a small wheel of aged goat Gouda and our friends from Arizmendi Bakery shared some of their fresh sourdough starter with me so we can feast in the middle of the Ocean! Provisioning of the non-perishable items is completed and now for that part of the trip preparation one more trip for fresh vegetables to Berkeley Bowl.

The Audi found its temporary home so now we're officially car less (but my sisters yellow Volvo has been spotted on H-dock :-)

The slight delay gives us a chance to see the 6th season of The Shield on DVD and between the continuing farewell dinners we have been enjoying watching the show. We encountered our first quake while we're here on the dock; Monday night we both felt something shaking very briefly, usually something we would feel when the rigging would be shaking with strong wind but there was none! It does take quiet some power to shake our 15 ton home and indeed there was a 4.0 quake around Danville.
